Petter Udland Johansen

Versatile musician Petter Udland Johansen sings, plays modern violin and Hardanger fiddle, and composes. He is a longtime member of the early music group Hirundo Maris, headed by Arianna Savall. Johansen was born in Oslo in 1971. He studied singing, violin, and piano as a child. Johansen did his undergraduate studies at the Music Academy of Norway, earning a diploma there in 1996. Johansen went on to the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, where he studied with singer Richard Levitt, also the teacher of countertenor Andreas Scholl. Remaining there from 1997 to 2000, he went on for further lessons in Basel with tenor Hans Peter Blochwitz. He has continued to be based in Basel, with its rich early music scene. He also mastered the Hardanger fiddle, a Norwegian folk instrument with drone strings, and the mandolin as well. Making a living in the 2000s by giving vocal workshops in several European countries, he became associated with singer Arianna Savall, the daughter of early music viol giant Jordi Savall. The pair formed Hirundo Maris in 2009, intending to explore early musical links between Scandinavia and the Iberian peninsula, and that year, Johansen made his recording debut on the Hardanger fiddle on Savall's album Peiwoh, which featured a mix of traditional and contemporary music. Hirundo Maris made its debut on the ECM label, produced by that label's prominent leader, Manfred Eicher, with the album Chants du Sud et du Nord. Johansen appeared on several more Hirundo Maris recordings, including 2014's Hildegard von Bingen: Vox Cosmica. Johansen went on to join other ensembles in the early music and folk fields, in which he feels equally at home; these include Capella Antiqua Bambergensis (with which he has toured widely as part of the "Klang der Staufer" project), Sagene Ring (a folk group singing songs about Oslo life), and Pechrima. He has toured widely with Hirundo Maris, which has been especially visible at European festivals, including the Fest für alte Musik in Cologne, Germany, the Jazz in Church Festival in Bucharest, the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Switzerland, and the Northern Lights Festival in Tromsø, Norway. Johansen and Savall are co-musical directors of the Fêtes Médiévales de Saillon in Switzerland, which plays host to upwards of 200 singers and instrumentalists, and of the Bardonecchia Harp Festival in Italy. In 2023, Johansen joined Savall on the album El cant de la Sibil.la, Draumkvedet, which included early monophony from Catalonia and Norway. He is also a composer who contributed original compositions to that album and arrangements for several other releases.
