Maarja Nuut
The music of Maarja Nuut has crossed boundaries, touching on the genres of choral music, electronica, folk music, and world music. She has recorded as a solo artist and as part of the duo Maarja Nuut and Ruum.
Nuut was born on February 11, 1986, in Rakvere, in northern Estonia. Her mother, a choir director, introduced her to music, and she started violin lessons at age seven. At 12, she entered the Tallinn Music High School, moving on to the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre for university studies. At this point, Nuut was a classical violinist, but she became interested in folk music as she attended folk festivals in Estonia and beyond. At 21, she went to India to study Indian classical music with cellist Saskia Rao de Haas. After she returned to Estonia, she enrolled in classes at the Viljandi Culture Academy at the University of Tartu. There, she heard old recordings of Estonian folk music as it had existed before World War II when the Soviet Union took control of the country. Nuut earned a master's degree at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, Sweden, studying folk music. During this period, she began to put together performances that merged singing, violin, keyboards, and an electronic looper, and she received international attention and bookings. She joined with electronic musician Hendrik Kaljujär, a.k.a. Ruum, to form the duo Maarja Nuut and Ruum, which has appeared at a variety of festivals and performed as far afield as Australia. She has also collaborated with a wide variety of other artists, including Sun Araw, the Estonian Chamber Choir, Kristjan Järvi, and Kiya Tabassian.
In 2013, Nuut released her solo album debut, Soolo. Maarja Nuut and Ruum released Muunduja (Shifter) in 2018. In 2020, Nuut's choral composition Threads appeared on the album Peaceful Choir: New Sound of Choral Music.
