Ekaterina Derzhavina

Pianist Ekaterina Derzhavina has moved easily between Russian and Western repertories, and from Bach to the virtuoso works of Medtner to music of the present day. She is also a prominent educator in Russia. Ekaterina Vladimirovna Derzhavina (searchers should beware of numerous alternate spellings in transliteration) was born in Moscow on September 8, 1967. She took up the piano at six and was sent to the specialized school of Moscow's Gnessin Institute. She enrolled at the institute itself in 1986, studying with Vladimir Tropp, and three years later she took third place at the All-Soviet Union piano competition, winning a special prize for the best interpretation of a Romantic work (Schumann's Kreisleriana). Derzhavina showed her versatility in 1992 when she bested 90 other pianists from 30 countries at the Saarbrücken International J.S. Bach Piano Competition. Since then, she has been active in both Russia and the West. She taught at her alma mater from 1993 to 2006 and then moved full-time to the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory as a professor. Derzhavina has concertized across western Europe, North America, and Japan in addition to Russia, where she has appeared at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory as well as other top venues. She is a frequent guest at festivals in western Europe and Russia. Her recording career has been concentrated in Germany, especially in the Saarland region, where she recorded a complete cycle of Haydn's piano sonatas at the Saarland Radio studios beginning in 1993. The set was released by the Profil label in 2013. Another notable Derzhavina recording was a highly praised reading of Bach's Goldberg Variations for keyboard, BWV 988, reissued by Arte Nova in 2008. Her album Nikolai Medtner: Forgotten Melodies won a Diapason d'or award in France. She joined violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky for a traversal of Medtner's complete works for violin and piano in 2018, issuing a miscellany of variation sets and short pieces by Haydn on Profil a year later.
