Di Melo

Di Melo (born April 22 1949) is a Brazilian singer and songwriter in the funk, soul and samba genres. He was born Roberto de Melo Santos in Recife, but moved to Sao Paulo in the late sixties. Beginning his career by working at bars as he wrote his songs, he finally caught the attention of the EMI-Odeón record label, with whom he recorded and released his seminal album Di Melo in 1975. The album featured the participation of renowned names within the Brazilian music scene, such as Hermeto Pascoal and Geraldo Vandré. It spawned several hit singles, including "Kilariô," "Se o mundo acabasse em mel," and "A vida em seus métodos diz calma." He continued writing and recording music for several decades, amassing over 100 unreleased songs, but a follow-up to his self-titled debut album took a long time to materialize. The 90s saw a resurgence of popularity for Di Melo, as his music was included in a compilation of Brazilian music by the legendary Blue Note label. Di Melo's debut album was reissued on CD in 2002. In 2011, he was the subject of the documentary film O Imorrivel. 2016 saw the release of Imorrível, the long-awaited follow-up to his debut album. In 2019 he released Atemporal, a collaboration album with Paris-based 8-piece Cotonete.
