Man tut immer gut daran, das Genie eines Künstlers neu zu beleben. Gregory Porter stürzt sich mit diesem exquisiten Album mit Leib und Seele in das Repertoire eines seiner Idole, Nat King Cole. Bei diesem außergewöhnlichen Musiker, virtuosen Pianisten, überaus feinfühligem Erneuerer, der zwischen reinem Jazz und Easy Listening hin- und herpendelt, und der eindeutig ein faszinierender Sänger/Crooner mit einer tiefen, romantischen Velourstimme ist, die man überall heraushört, ist Nat King Cole hier wirklich gut aufgehoben. Noch dazu ist diese Stimme eine der beeindruckendsten Soul’n’Jazz-Stimmen der letzten Jahre. Gregory Porter, der vor allem ein weitaus stärkeres und komplexeres Gefühl für Soul zeigt als seine Kollegen, nähert sich diesem Thema mit aller größtem Respekt. Denn Nat King Cole schlängelt sich wirklich wie ein roter Faden durch das Leben dieses vierzigjährigen Kaliforniers, der die Great Black Music bis in ihren hintersten Winkel kennt. „Er war einzigartig. Und die Musik, die er uns hinterlassen hat, die ist dermaßen schön. Wenn Sie seine Songs hören, sind Sie unausweichlich von diesem außergewöhnlichen Timbre seiner Stimme beeindruckt, von diesem unvergleichlichen Stil und diesem himmlisch coolen Gefühl... Meine Mutter erzählte mir immer, dass ich ihr eines Tages im Alter von fünf Jahren, ein Lied zu hören gab, das ich geschrieben und auf einer Kassette aufgenommen hatte. Aber du singst doch wie Nat King Cole, sagte sie zu mir! Ich guckte mir seine Plattencovers an und sagte mir, dieser Typ da hat ja wirklich einen komischen Namen, und plötzlich fiel mir dieses Bild in die Hände: ein eleganter Mensch, kräftig und genauso schön, am Kaminfeuer, wohl der Papa eines anderen kleinen Jungen. Ich legte die Schallplatte auf den Plattenspieler und da klang diese recht empathische Stimme aus den Lautsprechern. Da hat sich eine Lücke in mir geschlossen. Mein Vater fehlte in meinem Leben: er kümmerte sich nicht um meine Erziehung, zeigte keinerlei Interesse für mich. Als ich nun Nat Dinge wie 'Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again' (steh auf, staub deine Klamotten ab und fang nochmals von vorne an) singen hörte, all diese Lebenslehren, so waren sie für mich so etwas wie Ratschläge eines Vaters. Ich hörte diese Worte aus den Lautsprechern und es war, als ob Nat sie zu mir sagte und zu niemand anderem. Ich hörte mir diese Alben an und stellte mir vor, dass Nat mein Vater sei.“ Die Liebe zu Nat King Coles Musik bringt ihn dazu, den Jazzman als seinen Ersatzvater zu adoptieren! Und nachdem Porter in der musikalischen Komödie It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues gespielt hat, beschließt er auch, seine Beziehung zu Cole in Szene zu setzen und schreibt Nat King Cole & Me, eine musikalische, großteils autobiografische Komödie, die im Jahre 2004 zum ersten Mal aufgeführt wird. „Damit versuchte ich in gewisser Hinsicht, meinen Vater zu finden. Ich habe sie nach dem Tod meines Vaters geschrieben. Dieses Stück, für das ich die Hälfte der Musik komponiert habe, handelt von Nat King Cole. In erster Linie aber von der Art und Weise, wie ich seiner Musik wegen meines abwesenden Vaters nähergekommen bin. Es war wie eine Art Therapie, die ich mir selbst verschrieben habe. Anders war nur, dass es jeden Abend 800 Personen gab, die kamen.“ Mit Hilfe des Arrangeurs Vince Mendoza und einem Ensemble, zu dem der Pianist Christian Sands, der Bassist Reuben Rogers und der Schlagzeuger Ulysses Owens gehören, ersetzt nun Gregory Porter die Fans des im Jahre 1965 aus dem Leben geschiedenen Sängers und Pianisten. © CM/Qobuz
