Crewdson

Performing under the name Crewdson, British musician Hugh Jones (Crewdson is his middle name) takes an experimental D.I.Y. approach to electronic music, incorporating electronic and acoustic sounds, often from strange homemade instruments, into his distinctive compositions. Hailing from Northern England, Jones played in punk bands in his teens before enrolling at Goldsmiths in South East London to study electronic music. During this time he began an internship at the office of Accidental Records, whose owner, eclectic producer Matthew Herbert, eventually hired Jones first as his technical assistant, then to run the label. As Crewdson, he made his debut in 2010 with the Dust EP, followed a year later by his debut LP, Gravity, which won critical acclaim for its inventive mix of glitchy found sounds, unique rhythms, and odd melodicism. A single, "Sandstone," and a Gravity remix collection appeared in 2012, after which Jones busied himself with a wide range of projects, including a collaboration with harpist/singer Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian under the name Crewdson & Cevanne as well as time spent playing in bands like Saltwater Samurai and Hello Skinny. In addition to remixing tracks for Ninja Tune, Lo Recordings, Sunday Best, and Brownswood Records, he also formed the electronic soul duo Eckoclick with singer Femme. In between his many collaborations, Jones also found time to build a number of unique electronic musical instruments with names like the Odd Box, the Eggiophone, and the Sonic Bonnet. Many of these hand-designed instruments provided the inspirations and sounds heard on Crewdson's second full-length, 2017's Toys.
