Van Morrison n’a jamais eu à trancher entre rock, blues, rhythm’n’blues, soul et jazz puisqu’il a créé son propre style, du Van Morrison, à savoir un subtil alliage de rock, blues, soul et jazz… Parfois pourtant, le septuagénaire barde de Belfast insiste un peu plus sur l’un de ces genres. Comme ici avec Versatile où l’humeur est résolument jazz. Trois mois seulement après avoir publié Roll With The Punches sur lequel il reprenait des merveilles soul et blues signées Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley ou Little Walter, il revisite cette fois des standards entrés dans la légende de la note bleue. Avec ce retour aux sources, Van The Man chante les frères Gershwin (A Foggy Day et They Can't Take That Away From Me), Cole Porter (I Get A Kick Out Of You) et des incontournables comme Let's Get Lost (popularisé par Chet Baker), Bye Bye Blackbird, Makin' Whoopee, The Party's Over, Unchained Melody (magnifié au siècle dernier par les Righteous Brothers) ou bien encore I Left My Heart In San Francisco qui fut l’un des plus gros tubes pour Tony Bennett. Un 38e album studio que le maître de la blue-eyed soul aborde avec une certaine sérénité. Sa voix de crooner n’est logiquement plus celle de ses 20/30 ans mais il réussit à rendre attachante voire poignante chacune de ses phrases. Rien de révolutionnaire ici capable de rivaliser avec ses chefs d’œuvre Astral Weeks, Moondance ou Veedon Fleece, mais une grande sensation de bien-être tout de même.
