Durant des années, Chris Stapleton a loué sa plume à tout Nashville (mais pas que), signant des tubes pour Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Adele, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley et Dierks Bentley, et co-écrivant avec Vince Gill, Peter Frampton et Sheryl Crow. Le natif du Kentucky n’a donc plus trop à faire ses preuves niveau songwriting… Passer côté micro étant une toute autre affaire, son premier album solo qu’il se décide à enregistrer, à 37 ans, se devait d’être à la hauteur. Et il l’est. Certes, de 2008 à 2010, Stapleton avait piloté les SteelDrivers, sympathique groupe de bluegrass, mais cette fois, l’heure est à la rédaction de sa copie perso à lui tout seul… Produit par les doigts de fée et l’ouïe d’or de Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Jamey Johnson, Lucette, Rival Sons…), Traveller montre que Stapleton possède une vraie voix. Dans les ballades comme dans les titres nettement plus up-tempo, il habite ses chansons de fond en comble et y apporte parfois même une touche de soul sudiste comme sur Tennessee Whiskey. A l’arrivée, le songwriter signe un superbe disque de country contemporaine, attaché à une certaine tradition mais gardant ses bottes dans son époque. © CM/Qobuz
