Louise Alder is one of the rising generation of British sopranos, a BBC Cardiff Singer of the World finalist, and a performer with several operas under her belt, both in Britain and abroad. Her readings of these Strauss songs, a gutsy choice for a young singer (they have various adult currents lurking under the surface, and not just in the Leidenschaft, or Passion, section), have an operatic tinge. Alder is confident in all the high notes, but it's her characterizations that really attract attention. The program is divided into seven thematic sections: Youth, Longing, Passions, Partnership, Motherhood, Loss, and Release. This shows you, for one thing, how consistent Strauss' song language remained over his long career as a songwriter. It also groups songs with similar content together and gives Alder room to stretch out dramatically. Sample anywhere -- the interpretations are consistent throughout, and the whole thing has a nice coherence. The chief complaint pertains not to Alder, nor to accompanist Joseph Middleton, but to the Orchid Classics label, which declines to supply texts for the songs either in physical CD copies or online. This makes the album of most interest to German speakers, although the engineering at Potton Hall is very fine.
