Warm Brew

Taking notes from both hip-hop's golden era and staples of classic rock radio, California trio Warm Brew met in high school and developed their musical styles from there. Growing up in the sunny climes of Santa Monica, teenage friends Ray Wright, Manu Li, and Serk Spliff spent their early days rapping, partying, and bonding over their love of music ranging from De La Soul to the Doors. They took the name of their act from youthful days riding around with unrefrigerated cases of beer in the back seat, and took that optimistic, laid-back style into the creation of their sound. Early albums like Natural Spirit and Ghetto Beach Boyz saw the group developing a slightly psychedelic take on West Coast rap, and that sound congealed with the release of their 2016 EP Diagnosis, released on Red Bull Records. Warm Brew began in Santa Monica, California when all three members of the group met as high-schoolers. Ray Wright, Manu Li, and Serk Spliff spent their young days soaking up the sun and taking in California's musically rich environments. After high school, the trio began working on music more seriously, working low-pay jobs to save up for studio time and booking local shows. Early recordings like their breezy 2010 LP Natural Spirit and its funky, chilled-out follow-ups Kottabos in 2012 and The Ride in 2013 began to earn the group a devoted regional following. Their profile received a major bump in 2014 when they signed a deal with L.A. rapper Dom Kennedy's Other People's Money label to release their third album, 2015's Ghetto Beach Boyz. This buzz caught the ear of Red Bull Records, who stepped into the rap arena for the first time with the release of Warm Brew's 2016 EP, Diagnosis. The brief sampling of their sound featured collaborations with Racella and Hugh Augustine as well as Buddy, who featured on the song "I Swear," one of Warm Brew's best-received tracks to date. As their acclaim grew in the years that followed, the trio worked toward new music, releasing singles like "Small Victories," "Butane," and "Psychedelic" in the meantime to satiate their growing fan base.
