Peu avare en archives passionnantes, Neil Young ouvre à nouveau sa malle aux trésors avec un concert inédit assez essentiel. Enregistré sur plusieurs soirs au Cellar Door, un club de Washington, entre novembre et décembre 1970, il se situe surtout à un moment assez clef de la longue carrière du Loner (comme ses fans le surnomment). Son sublime After The Goldrush paru quelques mois plus tôt a amplifié son charisme et le « supergroup » qu’il forme avec David Crosby, Stephen Stills et Graham Nash s’est déjà séparé, à peine un an après ses premiers concerts… Épuisé par deux années de tournée, le Canadien décide de consacrer la seconde moitié de l’année 1970 à écrire de nouvelles chansons dans son ranch californien. Et pour préparer deux grandes soirées prévues au prestigieux Carnegie Hall de New York, il utilise l’intimiste club de Washington, le Cellar Door, pour répéter devant un modeste public. Miraculeusement, un magnétophone tournait ces soirs-là pour encapsuler cette musique épurée à l’extrême et qui sort enfin, 44 ans plus tard. Mêlant grands classiques du Buffalo Springfield (Flying On The Ground Is Wrong et I Am a Child) et nouvelles chansons (After The Goldrush et Tell My Why), ce Live At The Cellar Door offre même une version sublime et plutôt rare car interprétée au piano de Cinnamon Girl. Bref, un must pour tous les fans de Neil Young mais aussi une porte d’entrée intéressante pour les novices désireux d’entrapercevoir la face acoustique du grand songwriter canadien. © MD/Qobuz
