Disparu en 2012, Sergio Toppi fait partie de la génération des Pratt, Crepax et Battaglia qui bouleversa profondément le paysage de la bande dessinée européenne. Pour ce magnifique volume de la collection BD Music, le travail du Milanais est couplé à la musique et à ses plus grandes déesses. Notamment celles des Roaring twenties et des années folles, une ère synonyme de croissance et d’insouciance. Dans les dancings, on raffole du charleston, du black bottom et du Lindy Hop. C’est l’ère du jazz, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Sidney Bechet. C’est dans cet univers que naît une esthétique moderne de la chanson américaine qui exprime tout ce que vous vouliez dire sur l’homme, la femme ou l’amour, sans jamais oser le dire. Bref, la chanson libère la parole ! Une parole qui use volontiers de la dérision et du second degré. La femme est mutine et espiègle, l’homme est tour à tour objet de désir ou le pire des nasty man. Ce foisonnement de thèmes nourrit l’ensemble des chansons qui illustrent Toppi’s Ladies.Et les oubliées des années 20 comme Annette Hanshaw, Mildred Bailey et Connie Boswell, côtoient ici les stars des fifties et des sixties telles que Nina Simone, Chris Connor, Anita O'Day, Julie London ou bien encore Sarah Vaughan. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz
