Paul Weller a imposé son nom si jeune (il n'a que 18 ans lorsque sort le premier album des Jam, In The City, le 20 mai 1977 !) que sa carrière et sa discographie possèdent une densité hors norme. A 59 ans, l’indéboulonnable Modfather ne lâche toujours pas l’affaire ! Tant mieux. Avec A Kind Revolution, Weller offre même une hargne et une créativité toujours aussi impressionnante alors qu’il n’a évidemment strictement plus rien à prouver. Ce treizième album solo de l’ancien cerveau des Jam et de Style Council est moins expérimental que son prédécesseur Saturns Pattern qui naviguait dans des eaux allant de Traffic à Love, en passant par Captain Beefheart voire Tame Impala… Cette fois, Weller revient à ses fondamentaux rock’n’soul. Le ton est donné d’entrée de jeu avec Woo Sé Mama qui accueille dans ses chœurs deux reines cultes de la soul sixties et seventies : Madeline Bell et P.P Arnold ! D’autres invités viennent lui faire allégeance : le grand Robert Wyatt (She Moves With The Fayre) avec lequel il travailla déjà par le passé mais aussi, plus surprenant, Boy George, le temps d’un duo groovy et langoureux (One Tear) et, sur plusieurs titres, le jeune et nerveux guitariste des Strypes, Josh McClorey. On sort de cette Kind Revolution en se disant que, quarante ans après avoir entamé sa carrière, Paul Weller sait encore très bien faire du Paul Weller… © MZ/Qobuz

Paul Weller a imposé son nom si jeune (il n'a que 18 ans lorsque sort le premier album des Jam, In The City, le 20 mai 1977 !) que sa carrière et sa discographie possèdent une densité hors norme. A 59 ans, l’indéboulonnable Modfather ne lâche toujours pas l’affaire ! Tant mieux. Avec A Kind Revolution, Weller offre même une hargne et une créativité toujours aussi impressionnante alors qu’il n’a évidemment strictement plus rien à prouver. Ce treizième album solo de l’ancien cerveau des Jam et de Style Council est moins expérimental que son prédécesseur Saturns Pattern qui naviguait dans des eaux allant de Traffic à Love, en passant par Captain Beefheart voire Tame Impala… Cette fois, Weller revient à ses fondamentaux rock’n’soul. Le ton est donné d’entrée de jeu avec Woo Sé Mama qui accueille dans ses chœurs deux reines cultes de la soul sixties et seventies : Madeline Bell et P.P Arnold ! D’autres invités viennent lui faire allégeance : le grand Robert Wyatt (She Moves With The Fayre) avec lequel il travailla déjà par le passé mais aussi, plus surprenant, Boy George, le temps d’un duo groovy et langoureux (One Tear) et, sur plusieurs titres, le jeune et nerveux guitariste des Strypes, Josh McClorey. On sort de cette Kind Revolution en se disant que, quarante ans après avoir entamé sa carrière, Paul Weller sait encore très bien faire du Paul Weller… © MZ/Qobuz
