Libor Pesek: The Gold Collection is a four-CD trimline box set of the Czech conductor's performances with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded by Supraphon between 1981 and 1988. Pesek is noted above all for his interpretations of Czech classics, particularly of the music of Josef Suk, so that composer is well-represented by recordings of A Summer's Tale, Op. 29, the Serenade in E flat major, Op. 6, Under the Apple Tree, Op. 20, and Fairy Tale, Op. 16. Other areas of specialization for Pesek are modern French music, as shown in the choice of Claude Debussy's La Mer, and Maurice Ravel's Boléro and Daphnis et Chloé, and late Romantic fare, such as Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, Alexander Scriabin's Piano Concerto in F sharp minor, Op. 20, and Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 in E major. All of these performances make a worthy time capsule of Pesek's work in the 1980s, though that decade was the transitional period for digital recording, so the sound of some of these recordings suffer from flattened spatial dimensions, thin timbres with occasional raspiness, and a cool tone that doesn't match the ardent playing. Bearing in mind the age of the selections and the budget presentation, this is a set primarily issued for fans of the conductor and only secondarily for the music it contains.
