Who could forget Krokodil, the satiric magazine of the swinging Soviet '60s! Of course, to our western ears, the very notion of Soviet satire sounds quaintly oxymoronic. However, while the Soviet Union may not have had the most advanced economy or government in the world, it did have the most highly advanced sense of irony in the world. As the Soviet's greatest composer, Dmitry Shostakovich necessarily developed the most advanced sense of musical irony in the history of music. How else, after all, could he express himself in a society that periodically liquidated anyone who told the unvarnished truth except through the profoundest irony?
In this two-disc set, an ad hoc ensemble of émigrés recorded by the Quebec University of Laval has performed Shostakovich's five settings of letters printed in Krokodil in a style that can only be called highest irony. And it totally works. Along with Shostakovich's settings of Blok and Dostoyevsky, these slavic Quebecois turn in performances that burn with the bitterest and most despairing irony. Enfolding the songs, the Quebecois instrumentalists turn in performances of a handful of piano preludes, the second string trio, and the late violin sonata that blaze with the harshest and most brutal irony. As a complete program, these discs are magnificently musical and emotionally harrowing. As a recording, these discs sound clear, deep, and immediate. As a project, Krokodil is a complete success.
