Dieses wunderschöne Box-Set enthält alle sieben Alben, die der Kontrabassist und Komponist Charles Mingus zwischen Oktober 1973 und Dezember 1978 für das Label Atlantic aufgenommen hat, sowie ein Album mit bisher unveröffentlichten Werken. Die Sammlung dokumentiert die letzte große Schaffensperiode dieses bedeutenden Musikers der Jazz-Geschichte, bevor er im Januar 1979 im Alter von nur 56 Jahren an der Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Krankheit erkrankte. Einige dieser Platten gehören praktisch seit ihrer Veröffentlichung zum Pantheon der Mingus-Diskografie: die beiden Alben Changes One und Changes Two, die der Kontrabassist 1974 in derselben Session mit einem völlig neuen Quintett aufnahm und zu seinen letzten Meisterwerken zählen. Dieses Quintett wurde von Mingus treuem Schlagzeuger Dannie Richmond angetrieben und stellte zwei weitere Musiker ins Rampenlicht - den Saxophonisten George Coleman sowie den Pianisten Don Pullen. Andere Alben aus dieser Zeit hatten keinen guten Ruf, weshalb diese Sammlung eine ganz neue Perspektive auf die Werke dieser Periode ermöglicht - eine von vielen Besonderheiten dieses Box-Sets. Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Frische und der Charme des bluesigen Three or Four Shades of Blues, das Mingus 1977 in einer erweiterten Besetzung aufnahm und das dem Talent der drei jungen Gitarristen Larry Coryell, Philip Catherine und John Scofield, die eine große Karriere vor sich haben sollten, einen besonderen Platz einräumte. Die barocke Üppigkeit der beiden langen Orchestersuiten auf dem Album Cumbia & Jazz Fusion lässt Duke Ellington und Nino Rota auf unterschwellige Weise in einem traumhaften lateinamerikanischen Kontext miteinander in den Dialog treten. Das bewegende Me Myself An Eye, die letzte Aufnahme des Musikers, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits an den Rollstuhl gefesselt war und sich in einer Doppelrolle als Komponist und Überwacher der Sessions begnügen musste, zeugt trotz aller Umstände durchgehend von einer unauslöschlichen Lebenskraft. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz

Dieses wunderschöne Box-Set enthält alle sieben Alben, die der Kontrabassist und Komponist Charles Mingus zwischen Oktober 1973 und Dezember 1978 für das Label Atlantic aufgenommen hat, sowie ein Album mit bisher unveröffentlichten Werken. Die Sammlung dokumentiert die letzte große Schaffensperiode dieses bedeutenden Musikers der Jazz-Geschichte, bevor er im Januar 1979 im Alter von nur 56 Jahren an der Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Krankheit erkrankte. Einige dieser Platten gehören praktisch seit ihrer Veröffentlichung zum Pantheon der Mingus-Diskografie: die beiden Alben Changes One und Changes Two, die der Kontrabassist 1974 in derselben Session mit einem völlig neuen Quintett aufnahm und zu seinen letzten Meisterwerken zählen. Dieses Quintett wurde von Mingus treuem Schlagzeuger Dannie Richmond angetrieben und stellte zwei weitere Musiker ins Rampenlicht - den Saxophonisten George Coleman sowie den Pianisten Don Pullen. Andere Alben aus dieser Zeit hatten keinen guten Ruf, weshalb diese Sammlung eine ganz neue Perspektive auf die Werke dieser Periode ermöglicht - eine von vielen Besonderheiten dieses Box-Sets. Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Frische und der Charme des bluesigen Three or Four Shades of Blues, das Mingus 1977 in einer erweiterten Besetzung aufnahm und das dem Talent der drei jungen Gitarristen Larry Coryell, Philip Catherine und John Scofield, die eine große Karriere vor sich haben sollten, einen besonderen Platz einräumte. Die barocke Üppigkeit der beiden langen Orchestersuiten auf dem Album Cumbia & Jazz Fusion lässt Duke Ellington und Nino Rota auf unterschwellige Weise in einem traumhaften lateinamerikanischen Kontext miteinander in den Dialog treten. Das bewegende Me Myself An Eye, die letzte Aufnahme des Musikers, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits an den Rollstuhl gefesselt war und sich in einer Doppelrolle als Komponist und Überwacher der Sessions begnügen musste, zeugt trotz aller Umstände durchgehend von einer unauslöschlichen Lebenskraft. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
