Vom Konzept her ist diese Box mit 119 Titeln ein grundlegendes Dokument, will man den Fall Joni Mitchell verstehen. Genauso wie ihr Landsmann Neil Young es mit seiner Archives-Serie gemacht hat, vereinte die Kanadierin hier ihre ersten, großteils unveröffentlichten ersten Aufnahmen noch vor ihrem Debütalbum aus dem Jahr 1968, Song to a Seagull: Demoaufnahmen, Live-Mitschnitte und Radiosendungen zwischen 1963 und 1967. Alle von hervorragender Klangqualität. Natürlich bezieht sich dieses Vol. 1 auf die Zeit, als sie reinsten Folk sang, obwohl sie es immer gehasst hatte, als Folksängerin abgestempelt zu werden. Joni Mitchell ist aber ein besonderer Fall, erstens mit ihren neu interpretierten Klassikern wie House of the Rising Sun, Nancy Whiskey oder Merle Travis’ legendärem Dark As A Dungeon, wobei sie, manchmal mit nichts mehr als einer einfachen Ukelele ausgestattet, bereits ihre Originalität zum Tragen bringt. Gleichzeitig übt sie mit ihrer kristallklaren Stimme eine starke Anziehung aus, was sie von ihren damaligen Kolleginnen unterscheidet. Dann gibt es da noch ihre Eigenkompositionen, die Joni Mitchell hier auf faszinierende und beispiellose Art vorträgt (dauernd stimmt sie ihr Instrument), womit man schon ihren Stil erkennen kann, der im Zuge einer poetischen, aber keineswegs hochtrabenden Phrase oder in einer quasi impressionistischen Melodie zum Vorschein kommt. Nichtsdestotrotz richtet sich Archives – Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963 - 1967) an die Anhänger einer Künstlerin, die mit ihren zukünftigen Alben wie Ladies of the Canyon (1970) und Blue (1971) dann den wahren Höhepunkt ihrer Kunst erreichen sollte.
