Amandine Bourgeois

Amandine Bourgeois is a French pop singer/songwriter known for her powerful voice and diverse catalog. She first rose to fame in 2008 as the winner of the television talent show Nouvelle Star. Her debut album, 2009's 20 m2, was a Top Ten success in France and over the following decade, she experimented with her sound on the punchy retro-pop of 2012's Sans Amour Mon Amour to re-interpreting popular male French singers on 2014's Au Masculin. After the more introspective Omnia in 2018, Bourgeois returned with the positive and poignant women-centered album M.E.U.F. in 2024. Born on June 12, 1979, in Angoulême, France, Bourgeois grew up in a musical family and after a brief stint studying hospitality, began to pursue a career in music. She spent a couple years playing in local rock and funk bands around Toulouse, then landed a gig as a backup singer for Hélène Rollès and appeared in several stage musicals. Her big national break came when she was cast in the sixth season of Nouvelle Star, a French-language adaptation of Pop Idol. On the show's final episode in June 2008, she beat out runner-up Benjamin Siskou, subsequently earning a record contract with Sony Music. Bourgeois' debut album, 20 m2, was released in May 2009, reaching the Top Ten in both France and Belgium. The album featured a range of styles from edgy alt-pop to more acoustic ballads and featured the single "L'Homme de la Situation," written by award-winning Québécois singer/songwriter Ariane Moffatt. After several years of touring and a guest spot on Scorpions' 2011 comeback album, Bourgeois returned to the studio, working with English producer Ian Caple and some of the team who had been responsible for Amy Winehouse's success. Her sophomore album, 2012's Sans Amour Mon Amour, took a similarly retro approach with horn sections and a jazzy vintage pop flavor. The following year Bourgeois represented France at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest singing "L’Enfer Et Moi." After two albums of original material, her next project was a covers album of French songs originally made popular my men. Titled Au Masculin, the 2014 collection was one of her most diverse yet and included songs like Serge Gainsbourg's "L’Eau À La Bouche" and "J’Veux Pas Que Tu T’En Ailles" by Michel Jonasz. Bourgeois' fourth album, 2018's Omnia, was a more subdued and introspective affair and was followed by a six-year hiatus as she completed her next project. Released in 2024, M.E.U.F. was a confident and poignant return to form for Bourgeois. Its title is an acronym for "one thousand and one women" (Mille et Une Femmes) and follows the shared emotions and experiences of the women she has encountered in her life.
