"His master's voice!" That is a good way of summing up the interpretations offered here by Gabriel Tacchino (*1934) of the works of his teacher Francis Poulenc - because, to be sure, Poulenc had one true disciple on the piano, and that was Tacchino, from 1956. And where there exist many recordings of Poulenc himself on the piano, including those of Jacques Février who was often his partner for four-handed performances (and who also taught Tacchino), the work of an imitator, admirer and disciple can only shed new light on this perfumed, often spiritual, music, which defies classification and is so powerfully personal that it can be recognised from the first notes. These recordings were made in the high period from 1966 to 1967, and then between 1978 and 1984 in the Salle Wagram in Paris, and also in March 2017 for two tracks "by way of a bonus": Léocadia from the Chemins de l’amour, and the Sonata for Piano for Four Hands with his young student Emmanuelle Stéphan. All of Tacchino's art resides in his personal adoption of Poulenc's concepts, be it in terms of working with the text, or the concepts that he knew from his own work with the composer himself, who sometimes deviated from the letter of his work, which Tacchiano does not permit himself to do in any case. And so here are some indispensible documents for anyone interested in French music from the first half of the 20th Century, and the art of piano in the French style, as passed on by the master. © SM/Qobuz
