Reto Kuppel

As a soloist, orchestra concertmaster, chamber musician, and educator, violinist Reto Kuppel has been a prominent contemporary figure on the German musical scene. Kuppel was born in Bietigheim-Bissingen, near Stuttgart, Germany, on April 11, 1972. He showed talent as a youth and made his debut at age 13, in a concert in Greece. After winning Germany's Jugend Musiziert (Youth Making Music) competition, he won admission to the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, going on for further study with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York. Kuppel also studied chamber music performance with various teachers and took music education courses as well. He has gone on to teach violin at the Hochschule für Musik in Nuremberg. It was appearances at foundation galas that propelled Kuppel's solo career to the next level: appearances at concerts at the Franz-Wirth-Foundation and the Masefield-Foundation in Hamburg resulted in invitations to perform at the Tonkünstlerfest Baden-Württemberg, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the International Brahms Festival in Hamburg, the Rheingau Music Festival in Wiesbaden, and other German summer events. Kuppel has appeared at New York's Alice Tully Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and other top venues. In 1997 he became concertmaster of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, remaining in that position until 2013. His appearances via broadcast media have been unusually extensive, including recorded concerts for the NDR, tele5, ARD, Radio Duinrand, BR, and Radio de la Suisse Romande networks as well as the television broadcaster ZDF. Kuppel has recorded several albums for the Naxos label, specializing in little-known repertory of the 19th century. He has recorded world premieres of music by Friedrich Hermann and Ferdinand David, and he appeared on Naxos' Schubert album of Rarities, Fragments, and Alternative Versions. In 2017-2018 Kuppel teamed with pianist Wolfgang Manz for a pair of albums devoted to the compositions of French singer Pauline Viardot and her composer son Paul.
