Depuis son deuxième album Doin' My Thing (2009), Luke Bryan multiplie les succès, tant dans les classements country que pop du Billboard. Devenu l'enfant-chéri de la country contemporaine, ce fils d'un cultivateur de cacahuètes ne s'attendait guère à ce destin lorsqu'il commença la pratique de la guitare à quatorze ans ou même lorsqu'il composait, dans l'ombre, pour Travis Tritt ou Billy Currington.
Dix ans après son arrivée à Nashville pour vivre de sa musique (après avoir encaissé la mort accidentelle de son frère aîné), le natif de Leesburg (Géorgie) réalise son sixième album, What Makes You Country, dont l'intitulé sonne comme une profession de foi et d'allégeance à une musique qui a su conserver son esprit rural, en dépit des modes. C'est cette flamme séculaire que Luke Bryan entretient sur la quinzaine de chansons, dont il signe la moitié aux côtés de proches comme les homonymes Jeff et Jody Stevens ou d'une palette d'autres auteurs-compositeurs.
Pour identifiable qu'elle soit, avec sa débauche de guitares acoustiques, son tempo roulant et l'inévitable accent campagnard du gaillard, la country de Luke Bryan puise à bon escient dans le rock, comme en témoigne les torrents d'électricité de « What Makes You Country » ou de « She's a Hot One », à la limite du hard rock, entre des ballades plus traditionnelles tel « Most People Are Good » ou « Bad Lovers ». Il se laisser aussi aller à quelques effets électroniques, très légers, sur certaines introductions comme celles de « Out of Nowhere Girl » et « Sunrise, Sunburst, Sunset ». De simples effets de production pour apporter une touche moderne à son style ancré dans la tradition.
Le premier single extrait, « Light it Up », montre toute son efficacité tandis que, plus loin, ses talents de compositeur et de mélodiste se déploient sur « Land of a Million Songs » et « Pick it Up ». D'autres airs accrocheurs signés par des collaborateurs, notamment « Drinking Again » et « Driving Thing », ne peuvent que séduire les amateurs du genre.
