En 2014, Nick Mulvey lançait sa carrière solo avec l’album First Mind après avoir brillé au sein du Portico Quartet, formation jazz bizarroïde couverte de lauriers, de 2008 à 2011. Ce premier opus offrait à entendre un songwriter pop assez doué, dans l’âme duquel le folk semblait tenir une place majeure. Mais un folk singulier comme celui que tissaient John Martyn ou Nick Drake il y a bien longtemps. Et une pop atypique, comme minimaliste et répétitive (Glass ?) osant parfois des bifurcations bien loin des musiques occidentales (Mulvey a longtemps étudié la musique à La Havane notamment). Le résultat était assez déroutant, étonnant et simplement beau… Trois ans plus tard, on retrouve un Nick Mulvey encore plus affamé de sonorités plurielles. On traverse ce Wake Up Now comme on feuillèterait un atlas. Les influences venues d’Amérique du Sud ou d’Afrique ne sautent jamais à la gorge mais viennent plutôt subtilement déstabiliser les structures de ses compositions qu’elles soient pop ou folk. Du carburant coloré pour des chansons abordant aussi bien la crise des réfugiés que la simple joie de vivre. © MD/Qobuz
