Avec Hell Can Wait, son puissant et poisseux 7 titres de hip hop sombre et totalement live from la street paru en octobre 2014, Vince Staples montrait d’entrée de jeu qu’il était déjà dans l’embardée des futures stars narrant à la perfection le quotidien des hors-la-loi. Son premier véritable album confirme non seulement cette première bonne impression mais s’avère être déjà l’un des meilleurs opus de rap de 2015. Ces dernières années, la Californie du gangsta rap et de ses dérivées avait offert un casting joliment renouvelé (de Kendrick Lamar à Schoolboy Q, en passant par YG ou bien encore DJ Mustard, la palette est stylistiquement large) alors que les ingrédients de base restaient pourtant les mêmes (dope, flingues, cul, picole, chômage). A sa manière, Vince Staples réinterprète tous ces codes rabâchés, leur donnant une modernité inédite. La rue a beau rester la même, ses acteurs savent se renouveler. Après quelques mixtapes remarquées, des piges pour des membres du collectif Odd Future (dont Earl Sweatshirt) et pour Mac Miller et quelques faits d’arme tranchants au sein de Cutthroat Boyz (avec Joey Fatts et Aston Matthews), le jeune MC de Long Beach sort avec classe du sous-bois grâce à ce Summertime ‘06, instantané ultra-sombre de sa Cité des Anges au cœur duquel son flow et sa plume brille à chaque instant. © MD/Qobuz
