C’est toujours un peu l’épreuve du feu. Non pas le passage obligé mais un moyen de se mesurer à ses confrères d’hier comme d’aujourd’hui. Avec le bien nommé Standards, son dixième album studio, Seal escalade donc l’Everest des grands classiques du jazz et du swing. Depuis trois décennies, le Britannique n’a plus grand-chose à prouver quant à la teneur de sa voix soul. Mais cette parenthèse enchantée à la saveur rétro permet de rappeler comment cet organe puissant et sensuel peut dompter n’importe quel répertoire. Enregistré pour l’essentiel dans les fameux studios Capitol de Los Angeles, là même où Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat “King” Cole et tant d’autres gravèrent certains de leurs plus grands disques, Standards a été justement conçu avec l’aide de musiciens ayant épaulé ces grandes voix. On retrouve ainsi le pianiste Randy Waldman (Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka), le bassiste Chuck Berghofer (Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles) ou bien encore le batteur Greg Fields (Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder), tous réunis pour que Seal livre ses relectures de Autumn Leaves, I Put A Spell On You, Love For Sale, My Funny Valentine, I've Got You Under My Skin, Smile, I'm Beginning To See The Light ou bien encore Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow. « C’est l’album que j’ai toujours voulu faire, précise l’intéressé. J’ai grandi en écoutant la musique de l’époque du Rat Pack, et j’ai toujours rêvé d’enregistrer ces chansons intemporelles. Travailler avec les musiciens qui ont accompagné Frank Sinatra et tant de mes artistes préférés, dans les studios même où la magie a opéré pour la première fois, a été un véritable honneur. C’est toujours un peu l’épreuve du feu. Non pas le passage obligé mais un moyen de se mesurer à ses confrères d’hier comme d’aujourd’hui. Avec le bien nommé Standards, son dixième album studio, Seal escalade donc l’Everest des grands classiques du jazz et du swing. Depuis trois décennies, le Britannique n’a plus grand-chose à prouver quant à la teneur de sa voix soul. Mais cette parenthèse enchantée à la saveur rétro permet de rappeler comment cet organe puissant et sensuel peut dompter n’importe quel répertoire. Enregistré pour l’essentiel dans les fameux studios Capitol de Los Angeles, là même où Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat “King” Cole et tant d’autres gravèrent certains de leurs plus grands disques, Standards a été justement conçu avec l’aide de musiciens ayant épaulé ces grandes voix. On retrouve ainsi le pianiste Randy Waldman (Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka), le bassiste Chuck Berghofer (Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles) ou bien encore le batteur Greg Fields (Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder), tous réunis pour que Seal livre ses relectures de Autumn Leaves, I Put A Spell On You, Love For Sale, My Funny Valentine, I've Got You Under My Skin, Smile, I'm Beginning To See The Light ou bien encore Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow. « C’est l’album que j’ai toujours voulu faire, précise l’intéressé. J’ai grandi en écoutant la musique de l’époque du Rat Pack, et j’ai toujours rêvé d’enregistrer ces chansons intemporelles. Travailler avec les musiciens qui ont accompagné Frank Sinatra et tant de mes artistes préférés, dans les studios même où la magie a opéré pour la première fois, a été un véritable honneur.
