Grâce au brillant Home Again qu’il publia en 2012, Michael Kiwanuka est devenu en un claquement de doigts l’une des nouvelles merveilles de la soul contemporaine. De cette soul mâtinée de folk à la Terry Callier et fleurant bon les seventies… A 25 ans seulement, le Britannique était alors déjà comparé à Bill Withers, Otis Redding et Marvin Gaye (on pense à Inner City Blues sur Place I Belong et sur Love & Hate), rien que ça ! Pour son second album intitulé Love & Hate et qui illumine l’été 2016, le Londonien offre une face un brin plus rock sans pour autant renier ses influences. Produit par Danger Mouse, le disque comprend d’ambitieuses compositions (la symphonie Cold Little Heart qui ouvre magistralement l’album dure dix minutes !) et intègre des références inattendues comme celle de David Gilmour de Pink Floyd. Mais c’est aussi dans les refrains imparables que Kiwanuka est brillant. Lorsqu’il scande I’m a black man in a white world sur le morceau éponyme ou qu’il fredonne le motif répétitif et entêtant de la chanson Love & Hate qui donne son titre à l’album. Lorsqu’il déballe les cordes, il les utilise avec parcimonie. Et s’il intègre des chœurs à la saveur gospel, il agit avec une délicatesse identique.
