S’il existe encore des auditeurs qui tiennent Mendelssohn en mépris (“trop facile”, “trop plaisant”, “pas assez profond” et autres remarques peu amènes), on  les enjoint à se procurer ce coffret : des œuvres très bien rendues par l'ensemble des interprètes, toutes peu connues, justement, mais de superbes chefs-d’œuvre que nos chœurs et orchestres seraient bien inspirés de programmer de temps à autres, entre deux Messie. Mendelssohn ne renie naturellement pas sa filiation spirituelle avec Bach, ne serait-ce que par son usage – assez tombé en désuétude à cette époque, victime du mélodisme envahissant de l’opéra à l’italienne – d’une certaine rigueur polyphonique. Les cinq Psalmkantaten et les Choralkantaten, que l’on le veuille ou non, annoncent clairement, en particulier dans leur traitement choral et orchestral, les passages les plus recueillis de Wagner. De plus, Mendelssohn n’hésite pas à innover dans les formes : quintette vocal accompagné à l’orchestre, d’un effet sublime ; impressionnantes oppositions de masses ; écriture chorale tout à fait hardie. Schumann et encore plus Brahms (en particulier dans les trois Chants spirituels pour contralto, chœur & orchestre) ont clairement subi son influence dans ce répertoire et ce langage ; alors rendons à Mendelssohn ce qui est à Mendelssohn. Parmi les perles de cet album, l'Hymn "Lass, o Herr, mich Hilfe finden" pour contralto, chœur et orchestre (piste 49) et l'Hymn "Hör mein Bitten" pour soprano, chœur et orchestre (piste 53), autant pour la profondeur de l'inspiration mendelssohnienne que pour la qualité vocale et expressive de l'interprétation. © Qobuz
