C’est davantage le businessman que le musicien qui fait finalement parler de lui depuis pas mal d’années. Pourtant, Dr. Dre reste comme un des membres fondateurs de N.W.A et l’auteur de deux albums majeurs de l’histoire du rap : The Chronic en 1992 et 2001 en 1999. Seize années après ce dernier, le Doc se décide à publier son troisième opus. Titillé par le biopic consacré à ses défunts N.W.A, il a mis en boite ce Compton - A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre sur lequel les invités de marque se bousculent au portillon : Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice Cube, DJ Premier, Jill Scott, The Game… Premier constat, le G-funk d’antan, indissociable de son nom, a disparu. Dre propose ici des sons plus contemporains, histoire sans doute de ne pas s’aliéner les fans de rap en culottes courtes… Il montre aussi que son oreille comme ses doigts de fée de producteur sont tout sauf encrassés par les années qui défilent. Même son flow hypnotise toujours autant. On slalome donc dans ce Compton – A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre d’une grande diversité avec un plaisir non dissimulé. Pas sûr pour autant que Dre ait ici signé un disque aussi magistral, essentiel et révolutionnaire que The Chronic. N’empêche, cette cuvée 2015 reste bien au-dessus de la production actuelle… © MD/Qobuz
