Eine Reise in die Welt von Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), einem der großen englischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts, der sich in Chormusik und "Liedern" ebenso ausdrückte wie in Orchestermusik und Oper. Seine neun sehr unterschiedlichen Sinfonien gehören neben denen von Sibelius, Mahler und Hartmann zu den faszinierendsten Werken ihrer Art im 20. Jahrhundert. Besonders reizvoll sein kantiger Lyrismus, der die Filmmusik beeinflusst hat (Sinfonie Nr. 5, Partita, Der vergiftete Kuss, Fünf Varianten, Flos Campi, On Wenlock Edge), aber Vaughan Williams' Werk ist ebenso kraftvoll in seinem Ausdruck von Gewalt, und einige der Kompositionen erweisen sich als ebenso düster und schroff (Sinfonien Nr. 4 & 6, Ouvertüre zu den Wasps).
