Edward Kennedy Ellington, auch bekannt als Duke Ellington (1899-1974), war ein amerikanischer Jazzpianist, Komponist, Arrangeur und Bandleader. Er komponierte unzählige Jazzstandards und wurde zu einem der berühmtesten schwarzen Amerikaner des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er veröffentliche Alben für zahlreiche Labels, trat in mehreren Filmen auf und tourte bis zu seinem Tod durch die ganze Welt. Die meisten seiner Werke entstanden mit großem Orchester und teilweise namhaften Gästen, aber er war auch in kleineren Ensembles und Soloprojekten tätig.
