Noch vor ihrem Highschool-Abschluss stand sie in der Grand Ole Opry auf der Bühne. Dann zog sie nach Nashville und schrieb Songs für Größen wie Skeeter Davis und Kitty Wells. Obwohl sie ihre erste Single, "Dumb Blonde", 1967 nicht selbst schrieb, überzeugte sie durch ihre witzige Haltung und ausgefeilte Ästhetik. Dolly Parton unterschrieb auch beim Musiker Porter Wagoner, trat in seiner wöchentlichen Fernsehshow auf und nahm Duette mit ihm auf. Ihre Solokarriere begann mit "Jolene", "Coat of Many Colors" und ihrer ersten Nummer 1, "Joshua", durchzustarten. Aber es war ihre berufliche Trennung von Wagoner Control, die Dolly Parton dazu brachte, einen ihrer größten Songs zu schreiben: das unvergessliche "I Will Always Love You", das durch Whitney Houston und den Film "Bodyguard" berühmt wurde.
