Orchester Wiener Akademie
Among the few groups to play Liszt's music on historical instruments, the durable Orchester Wiener Akademie ("Orchestra of the Vienna Academy") performs music from the Baroque to the late Romantic era. The orchestra has a large catalog of recordings, some of them in its own RESOUND series that seeks to re-create historical sound ambiances.
The Orchester Wiener Akademie was founded in 1985 by conductor Martin Haselböck, who remains its music director as of the early 2020s. It was one of the first wave of historical instrument groups in Austria, and it found success almost immediately, releasing an album of concertos by C.P.E. Bach on the Novalis label in 1988. A distinguishing feature of the orchestra's work has been its flexibility; it includes historical instruments of various periods as well as modern ones, and it has performed music from the Baroque to the late Romantic era. Performing at home in the Musikverein hall in Vienna, the Orchester Wiener Akademie has appeared at more than 100 venues across Europe and North America, as well as in such cities as Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro, and Tel Aviv. It is a fixture at such annual events as the Prague Spring Festival, the Frankfurter Fest, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and the Wiener Festwochen. In Vienna, the orchestra has played host to a sequence of world-class vocal and instrumental soloists, including pianist Cyprien Katsaris, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, and violinist Isabelle Faust.
The Orchester Wiener Akademie is one of the few groups to have performed the music of Liszt on period instruments. The group has served as the resident orchestra of the International Liszt Festival and has made historically oriented Liszt recordings for the Alpha label. The group's recording catalog is unusually large, including releases on the CPO, NCA, and Gramola labels, in addition to longstanding relationships with Novalis and Alpha. On the latter, the orchestra released the collection Resound Beethoven: Complete Symphonies in 2020. The "Resound" designation referred to a series of Orchester Wiener Akademie recordings made in venues where the works performed had been premiered. The orchestra has partnered with several opera companies and choirs, and its future plans include recordings of Haydn's oratorio The Creation and of Schubert's complete masses. It has also developed two music dramas, The Infernal Comedy, and The Giacomo Variations, with actor John Malkovich. In 2022, the orchestra moved to the Aparte label for the album Liszt: Legends of the Saints, Vol. 1.
