Mieczyslaw Weinberg's little comic opera Wir Gratulieren! (Congratulations!) was written in Russian, with a libretto by Weinberg himself, based on a play called Mazel Tov! by Sholem Aleichem of Fiddler on the Roof fame. Weinberg threw in some material about the class struggle to impress the Soviet censors but otherwise left Aleichem's story alone. Here, in a performance from 2012 but not released until 2020, the opera is translated into German and arranged for chamber orchestra. This may seem excessive for a virtually unknown work but consider these factors. First, Weinberg's star has been in the ascendant since 2012, and he's looking like a figure who will crack the Russian canon. Second, conductor Vladimir Stoupel was at the Soviet premiere in 1983 and has close connections to the music. He leads a group of largely unknown singers here at a high, crisp, professional level. Third, the chamber transcription has the varied orchestration that will be familiar to anyone who likes Weinberg; this reviewer has not heard the original, but it is likely that the essence was preserved, and the comic nature of the material, with some spoken dialogue, fits the setting. Lastly, and most importantly, the tale, depicting a romance between a bookseller and a cook at an estate owned by well-off Jews, is delightful. Just as much as the Fiddler on the Roof stories, the opera is a little ode to the power of the arts. For non-German speakers, an English libretto (found online) will enhance the already considerable enjoyment.
