Construit sur une trame narrative inversée, ce treizième album de The Roots parle d’un certain Redford Stephens qui, après sa mort, tente de retrouver un sens à son existence passée. soit « l'histoire d'un môme qui devient criminel, mais qui n'est pas né ainsi. » En réalité, cet opus, qui est composé de ballades poignantes soutenues par des refrains plein d'élégance, met en perspective les questions soulevées par la crise américaine (pas uniquement économiques, mais aussi sociales) - au moyen desquelles les musiciens de The Roots peuvent faire valoir un fort engagement politique.
