À propos

L'oratorio tardif Theodora de Haendel (1749) narre le martyre tragique de l'héroïne et de son amant Didyme à Alexandrie en Egypte, au début du quatrième siècle de notre ère. L'intrigue d'une jeune fille vierge persécutée et livrée à la débauche donnant lieu à des scènes cruelles voire obscènes ne fut pas du goût de tous à l'époque, néanmoins l'oeuvre emporta un franc succès. Joachim Carlos Martini a déjà enregistré plusieurs oratorio de Haendel (Solomon, Hercules, Tobie...) et sa version de Theodora se hisse parmi les sommets.

L’oratorio Theodora de Händel ne compte pas parmi les plus grands succès que connut le compositeur de son vivant. Cependant, les raisons n’en résident pas dans la qualité musicale, mais dans le sujet qui, en cette année 1750, ne pouvait guère convenir au public anglais férocement anti-catholique. Le livret présente les Romains comme de barbares anti-chrétiens – alors que le monde romain était alors une sorte de modèle pour l’intelligentsia anglaise – tandis que les martyres chrétiens, Theodora et Didyme (qui n’appartiennent pas au Livre des martyrs en usage dans la religion anglicane) sont ici glorifiés alors que le public les associait au catholicisme romain honni… Par ailleurs, une partie de l’action se déroule dans un bordel, de quoi horrifier les esprits bien-pensants qui ne viennent pas écouter un oratorio pour voir chanter des dames de petite vertu ! Bref, de quoi faire un superbe four, quelque belle que soit la musique.

    Car la partition est du plus grand Händel, celui des toutes dernières années ; peu d’auto-emprunt, le compositeur a ici fait preuve d’une débordante imagination. Le duo final entre les deux héros, d’une profonde émotion, vaut, à lui seul, son pesant d’or. A redécouvrir ! Haendel lui-même plaçait Theodora en tête de ses œuvres favorites, avant Le Messie : à méditer…

    Joachim Carlos Martini a déjà enregistré plusieurs oratorios de Händel (Solomon, Hercules, Tobie...) et sa version de Theodora se hisse parmi les sommets.
