Kalpana Patowary

Kalpana Patowary is an Indian playback and folk singer from Sorbhog, Assam. Even though she is best known for her extensive contributions to Bhojpuri cinema, she can sing in 30 languages and has also been featured in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, and Bengalese films. Born into a musical family, she was exposed to Bhojpuri folk music from a very early age and began performing with her father at the age of 4. In 1999, she made her official debut as a playback singer on the Tamil-language romantic drama Taj Mahal, lending her voice to the A. R. Rahman-penned track "Thirupachi Aruvala." In the following years, Kalpana Patowary made her acting debut in the 2006 Bhojpuri film Chalat Musafir Moh Liyo Re and appeared in the reality singing competition Junoon - Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka (2008) while continuing to collaborate closely with some of the biggest names in the local film industry. In 2013, she featured as herself in the documentary Bidesia in Bambai, which offered a glimpse of Mumbai through the lens of migrant workers and their different cultures. In addition to her playback singing work, she is also a renowned performer of bhajans, a type of devotional song that is very popular in India. In 2022, her rendition of the bhajan "He Bhole Baba" peaked at Number 7 on the Billboard India Singles Chart.
