S'inspirant d'un drame de la Rome ancienne opposant patriciens et plébéiens, la Virginia de Mercadante fut composée en 1850 mais dut attendre 1866 pour être créée, au théâtre San Carlo de Naples, car le compositeur refusa de céder à la censure et de réécrire son œuvre. Une véritable perle du Bel Canto, enregistrée ici pour la première fois.
A la tête d'une époustouflante distribution vocale, Maurizio Benini insuffle vie et passion à cette œuvre particulièrement originale.
