Long before 1966, when he started his relationship with George Harrison, which would stoke broad Western interest in Indian music, Ravi Shankar struck up a friendship with the classical violinist Yehudi Menuhin, whom he first met in 1952. The pair only finally embarked upon a musical collaboration in 1966, for a handful of concerts and the recording of their famous album West Meets East. This album brings together, in a jumbled-up order, the whole of that record's A side, written by Ravi Shankar – Prabhati, Raga Puriy Kalyan and Swara-Kakali (based on Raga Tilang) –, the other side being made up of a composition by Menuhin's mentor, the Romanian George Enesco. This fertile friendship, which would continue until the violinist's death in 1999, produced two other volumes: West Meets East 2 in 1968, represented by Raga Piloo, and volume 3, which came out in 1976 and which also features the famous flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal, whose remarkable closing number, Morning Love, opens this volume. The two western virtuosos, whose instruments also exist in the classical Hindu tradition to which Ravi Shankar refers, are not the only ones to have been approached by the sitar player. Western classical orchestral conductors André Previn and Zubin Mehta have also conducted his multicultural scores. In 1971, at the head of the London Symphony Orchestra, the former gave the world the Concerto for sitar & orchestra, whose four movements are reproduced here. In 1982, Ravi Shankar returned to the London Symphony Orchestra, this time under the baton of his compatriot Zubin Mehta for Concerto for sitar & orchestra n°2. If these two concertos are of equally great interest, the second draws out the timbres of the orchestra to better effect. Later, Ravi Shankar would start another project involving contemporary classical Western music, working with minimalist composer Philip Glass, but the works here are a record of a wild determination to bring together two immense cultural traditions, as well as of the universality of musical meaning, and of the genius of the much-missed sitarist. © BM
