Carmen McRae déclara un jour qu'il n'y avait qu'une et une seule chanteuse de jazz : Betty Carter. Aujourd’hui pourtant, cette grande voix originaire du Michigan, experte en scat, est souvent négligée pour ne pas dire oubliée. Dans la collection Precious & Rare, cette superbe compilation de 53 titres enregistrés entre 1948 et 1961 – l’une de ses périodes les plus réussies où elle fréquente notamment le grand pianiste Ray Bryant et chante aussi en duo avec Ray Charles – rend justice à une grande voix à redécouvrir de toute urgence.
