Loreen

Shooting to stardom in 2012 after winning the Eurovision Song Contest with "Euphoria," Swedish pop singer and songwriter Loreen went on to top the charts with her debut album, Heal. A steady stream of singles, television show appearances, and the Top 40 sophomore set Ride carried her through the remainder of the decade. After years without a hit, she staged a major comeback that culminated with another victory on the 2023 Eurovision stage, where she took the top prize once again for "Tattoo," making her the second performer (and first woman) to win the song competition twice. Born in Stockholm in 1983, Loreen -- real name Lorine Zeineb Nora Talhaoui -- first made her mark on the music scene at the age of 21. The singer, who is of Moroccan Berber descent, appeared in the 2004 season of Swedish Idol, performing songs by artists such as the Police, Britney Spears, and Stevie Wonder. Loreen battled her way to the semifinals of the competition before eventually finishing in fourth place. In 2005, she released the single "The Snake" with Rob'n'Raz before venturing into the world of television presenting with TV400 for a year. Following this, Loreen decided to take a step back behind the cameras and work in production. This break from the limelight lasted until 2011, when Loreen entered into the Melodifestivalen -- the competition that finds the Swedish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest -- with the song "My Heart Is Refusing Me." Unfortunately, this was another "nearly" moment in her career as she didn't quite make the final round of the competition. However, not to be denied, Loreen bounced back at Melodifestivalen 2012, where she won the chance to represent her country at that year's Eurovision with the song "Euphoria." Written by Thomas G:Son and Peter Boström, the track was driven along by an uplifting trance beat and showed off Loreen's powerful vocals, which took inspiration from the likes of Björk, Enya, and Lisa Gerrard. "Euphoria" won Eurovision 2012 and became a hit single all over Europe. In the U.K., it reached number three in the charts and stayed in the Top 20 for some time, while in some countries, including France and Germany, it went to number one. Loreen's debut album, Heal, followed in October of the same year, entering at the top of the chart in Sweden. In 2014, Loreen announced what was supposed to be her sophomore album, Paperlight, which was set to feature collaborations with Kiesza. However, only a series of singles -- "Paper Light (Higher)," "Under ytan," and "I'm in It with You" -- were released. She spent the coming years performing for Eurovision-related events and even joined national contests to compete in the contest again. By 2017, she had pivoted to a new project, the Nude EP, which included the singles "Body" and "Jungle" featuring Elliphant. Her official sophomore effort, Ride, landed at the end of the year, peaking at number 31 on the Swedish chart. Additional singles carried her into the 2020s, during which time she also appeared in the Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga and on the 11th season of the Swedish television show Så mycket bättre. Loreen launched her fourth bid for Eurovision in late 2022 with the song "Tattoo." The track won the national competition and shot to number one on the Swedish charts, sending her back to the grand stage in Liverpool, England. In May 2023, she was crowned champion with almost 600 points, becoming the second person to win twice and scoring Sweden its seventh win overall.
