Entre The Consul et Amelia al ballo, c’est tout un monde : Le Consul de 1950 traite d’un sujet brûlant, le sort de tant d’immigrants entre les griffes d’officiels rapaces et cyniques. L’opéra commence mal, puis tourne au cauchemar avant de tomber dans la catastrophe, il n’est donc pas à conseiller aux esprits suicidaires ou dépressifs. La musique de Menotti, irrésistible, terrible, ne joue jamais le jeu du vérisme ou de la pleurnicharderie bon marché : le compositeur sait doser les effets à merveille, usant des tournures musicales de manière à commenter l’impression dramatique plutôt que de bêtement la doubler ou la singer.    Amelia al ballo, donné ici dans sa version italienne originale (Menotti n’a écrit que deux opéras dans sa langue natale, les autres étant écrits d’emblée en anglais), narre l’aventure d’Amélie qui s’apprête à aller au bal ; mais son mari jaloux a eu vent qu’elle a un amant, et exige de savoir son nom avant de l’accompagner au bal. Amélie l’informe que c’est tout simplement le voisin du dessus. Le voisin débarque, mêlée générale, Amélie assomme son mari d’une grosse potiche, on appelle la police en prétendant qu’un voleur a assailli le pauvre mari. On emmène le mari à l’hôpital, la police embarque l’amant-voisin qu’elle prend pour le voleur et assaillant, tandis qu’Amélie se rend au bal au bras du chef de la police. Cynique, misogyne comme The Telephone, délicieux, ce petit bijou date de 1937 : le tout jeune Menotti, 23 ans, signe là son premier grand chef-d’œuvre, dans un style qui se moque aimablement du vérisme de l’époque, en « en faisant trop » par moments, mais avec un sens de la dérision tout à fait épatant.    Deux enregistrements de 1950 ; Le Consul bénéficie ici de la distribution originale, qui venait d’assurer la création à peine quelques semaines auparavant. A découvrir d’urgence pour ceux qui ne connaîtraient pas encore !
