À propos

George Macfarren était considéré par certains de ses contemporains comme le plus grand compositeur d'opéra anglais après Purcell. Robin des Bois est son oeuvre la plus connue et populaire. Ronald Corp dirige le choeur et l'orchestre du Victorian Opera avec énergie et bonheur.

L’opéra-opérette d’essence anglaise avant Gilbert et Sullivan, c’est Macfarren. Son Robin Hood de 1860 représente le summum de l’art lyrique britannique, voire victorien ; naturellement, l’ombre de l’Europe continentale plane sur tout l’ouvrage, d’autant qu’à l’époque, il n’existait pas encore de véritable style spécifiquement outre-manchesque. Macfarren, né en 1813 (comme Verdi et Wagner), surprendra l’auditeur par l’originalité de son invention mélodique, ainsi que la finesse de son orchestration. Mendelssohn lui-même n’avait-il pas inscrit quelques-unes de ses œuvres au programme du Gewandhaus de Leipzig ? Wagner lui-même, monsieur dent dure s’il en est, se montra très admiratif de l’une des ouvertures de Macfarren. A vous donc de vous faire votre propre idée sur ce compositeur, à travers l’une de ses plus grandes réussites.

    Robin Hood alterne chevalerie, farce, pompe et humour anglais, avec un zeste de moralité, de chauvinisme britannique, et une forte dose d’autodérision – le meilleur contrepoison contre le chauvinisme. Voilà une contribution fort bienvenue au répertoire disco-lyrique, bien loin des trop fréquentes platitudes du bel-canto et des lourds drames historiques du grrrrrrand opéra français. A découvrir !
